Monastery Arkadi - Chania - Rethymnon
In the morning we drive along the panoramic coast road alongside the Kouloukounas Mountains to the coastal plain near Rethymnon.
Shortly before the town, we turn towards the south and drive to the Monastery of Arkadi, set on a small plateau in the Ida Mountains, passing through one of the oldest olive groves on Crete. The monastery is a national shrine for the Cretans. It was here that the resistance against the Turkish rulers came to its peak in 1866, with a mass suicide of the population. We will take a look round the monastery before travelling on to the fertile coastal plain around Chania; the panoramic view of the White Montains as a backdrop to the lush vegetation.
In Chania, the most attractive town on Crete, we will take a long lunch break. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the seemingly oriental market, the leather street and the charming, old town with its Venetian harbour.
On the journey back we will make a stop in the town of Rethymnon. The townscape is characterised by the huge Venetian fortress, the so-called Fortezza, set on a rock plateau by the sea. The tiny Venetian harbour is also worth a visit
Note: This excursion is for guests in the resorts from Aghia Pelagia to Malia.
