Crete is rich in monasteries and Byzantine churches, which played an important role during the time of
the Turkish occupation. Many of the buildings house well preserved icons and wall paintings.
Accommodation in Iraklion or surrounding area
1. Day: Toplou Monastery - east Crete In the grounds of Toplou is a church dating from the 14th century and here valuable icons and vestments are on display. The monastery is rich in land and was a centre of resistance during the Turkish occupation.
2. Day: Kera Monastery on the northern slopes of the Dikti Range and Panagia I Kera Church - near Kritsa.
3. Day: Valsamonero and Vrondisi Monasteries - near Zaros.
4. Day: Arkadi, Rethymnon. The symbol of Cretan resistance.
5. Day: A day in the present. The rare chance to be together with villagers, to try food and drink and experience everyday life.
All these are just suggestions. Each special interest group is dealt with separately but a mixture of the different programmes is also possible, which allows for extensive impressions to be gained of Crete.
